The Basics of Dominoes

domino

Dominoes are a family of tile-based games. These tiles are shaped like a rectangle with two square ends, each marked with a number of spots. A game is won when the player can get all the spots on each end without losing any pieces. Several variations are available, including color variations.

Origin

The exact origin of the game of domino is uncertain. It may have first been played in the late 18th century in France and brought to England by French prisoners of war. The name domino comes from the black and white hoods worn by Christian priests in winter. The game was subsequently adopted throughout the Americas and Latin America. Some historians believe that the game was invented by the Inuit tribes, who played it before Europeans did.

Variations

There are several different variations of the classic game of domino. In a standard game, two players hold seven tiles, one of which must be placed on another tile to score points for that tile. Other variations use a spinner tile or multi-colored tiles. One of the more popular variations is the Crazy domino, where one player plays a single-colored tile and then creates branches that are all different colors. The player who scores the most points wins the game.

Scoring

There are two basic ways of playing dominoes: blocking and scoring. In scoring dominoes, the first player to lay down all his or her tiles wins the game. In blocking dominoes, the goal is to prevent your opponent from placing any tiles. In blocking dominoes, you earn points based on the number of tiles that remain at the end of the game.

Colors

The colors used in Domino’s logo have become a universal symbol for the brand. This is because these colors are synonymous with the company and represent trust, strength and purity. Each color has specific hexadecimal and RGB codes.

Sets

The problem of determining a set of dominoes by counting the dominoes on it is known as a domino problem. The problem is NP-complete. But there is a bounded version of this problem which is known as a bounded domino problem.

Rules

The basic rules of domino are similar to chess. The first player places the base of three or four dominoes. Then, the subsequent players place a tile on the open end of the domino. The first player to reach 120 points wins the game. This game encourages cooperation and socialization between players.
